ATHLETICS WEST TO LAUNCH STREAMER PARTNERSHIP WITH NEXT GENERATION OF AUSTRALIAN HOPEFULLS

Published Wed 01 Nov 2023

Athletics West is excited to announce a new live-streaming partnership with Streamer for the 2023-24 Summer Season. The partnership will see three of Athletics West’s marquee events streamed live and for free on the Streamer platform.

Streamer’s coverage of Athletics West Championships will launch with the 2023 WA All Schools Championships powered by Go For 2&5 from Friday, 3rd November, before returning for both the 2024 State Track & Field Championships and 2024 State Junior Track & Field Championships

Streamer — owned by The West Australian — will supercharge Athletics West’s Championship season as WA athletes build towards the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, as well as the 2024 World Athletics Junior Championships.

The partnership comes after a huge international season for the state which saw WA’s Nina Kennedy claim the World Athletics Pole Vault title in spectacular scenes, as well as podiums for Pole Vaulter Kurtis Marschall and Para Sprinter Rhiannon Clarke.

The 2023 WA All School Championships powered by Go For 2&5 will launch the partnership as WA’s best high school-aged athletes look to qualify for the Australia All School Championships bound for Perth in December. Amongst the WA students competing will be Commonwealth Youth Games Semi-Finalist Josiah John, newly anointed WA State Record holder Lauren Kelly and up-and-coming Heptathlete Sophie Williams.

Fresh off running a blitzing 10.60 at the School Sport WA Interschool Carnival, Josiah John will be one to watch out on the track. The WA sprinter has enjoyed a breakout year after making his Australian team debut in Trinidad at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games.

“The 10.6 was crazy especially because of the time of year, the season is just starting. The more [me and my Coach] look at the race the more we see how much we can improve on. I’m feeling great for WA All Schools, I’m feeling quick, so hopefully get around that 10.6 again, consistency is key.”

“The 100m and 200m showdowns will be good. You’ll see everyone going out there and giving their all and having fun. School kids can enter, and you never know, it might be the best thing. Get ready for some good times.”

Launching into the 2023-24 Summer Season with a new Shot-Put state record, Lauren Kelly is the first to admit that streamers will have a tough choice on their hands when it comes to the throws. With every athlete fighting for a selection spot, expect big throws and tough battles all weekend long.

“Across all the age groups we have so many strong throwers that not only do well at states, but at national level,” said Kelly.

“I think people should keep an eye on Javelin for both boys and girls, for all the age groups, it’s going to be interesting. In my age group it’s going to be a good competition, we have three athletes that are throwing the same distances.”

Young gun Sophie Williams is quickly becoming a familiar face on National podiums with the Australian Junior Champion set to battle it out across track and field events as she builds towards a return to the State team in December.

“I’m feeling pretty good and excited to go out and versus athletes in the same age group. It’s the best way to understand where you are and what you need to do before National All Schools. I compete differently on different tracks, but part of me knows that I’m probably going to jump further here, so [I’m] excited to get out there.” Williams added.

Eager to see the partnership come together, Athletics West CEO Vince Del Prete called the deal a ‘monumental step in the sport’s profile and commercial strategy in Western Australia.’

“Athletics in Australia is entering a golden era, and we are thrilled to have a partner like Streamer to showcase our Championships across the country.” Said Del Prete.

“The success our athletes have found on the international stage starts here in WA, and now thanks to this partnership every athletics fan will be able to see it live and for free on Streamer.”
