Throws Masterclass

The Throws Masterclass is a coach development opportunity designed for coaches seeking to specialise in the throwing events as part of the Australian Athletics Level 3 Performance Coach accreditation pathway. Covering Shot Put, Discus, Javelin and Hammer Throw, the Masterclass provides in-depth technical and practical learning to support coaches working with athletes across the performance pathway.

The Masterclass is also open to coaches who are not currently undertaking their Level 3 accreditation but are seeking to expand their expertise in the throwing disciplines. Whether you coach developing athletes, emerging talent, or simply want to broaden your knowledge across the throws events, this Masterclass offers valuable insights to enhance your coaching practice.

Coach Facilitator - Grant Ward

Grant is the Para Unit Coach (Athletics and Multisport) at the Western Australian Institute of Sport and one of Australia's most experienced coaches, with Level 5 accreditation in Throws, ATFCA Level 5 accreditation in Multi Events. Grant's extensive coaching experience has seen him appointed as a National Team Coach at 3 x Olympic Games, 1x Paralympic Games, 4x World Championships, 4x Commonwealth Games, 2x World U20 Championships and 1x World University Games and athletes under his tutelage included former Australian Record holder Kim Mickle (World Championships Silver Medallist, Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Javelin) and Kylie Wheeler (2x Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist, Heptathlon), amongst many other Australian representatives.

Coach Facilitator (Hammer Throw) - Jacob Schelfhout

Jacob is a Level 2 Development Coach and an accomplished hammer throw athlete, winning multiple state titles and national medals. Jacob has extensive coaching experience, developing throwers across a range of abilities. His coaching focuses on developing sound technical foundations, physical preparation, and long-term athlete progression.
