11 WA ATHLETES BOUND FOR BIRMINGHAM

The final Australian Commonwealth Games Athletics team has been confirmed with a significant boost in athletes taking the total team to 85 competitors bound for Birmingham. Amongst the new selections are three West Australians including Tokyo 2020 Olympic Race Walker Declan Tingay.

Tingay will be joined by fellow West Australian athletes, including middle-distance star Matthew Ramsden and 2018 Commonwealth Games athlete Angus Armstrong, taking WA’s total to 11 athletes.

Declan Tingay will don the Green and Gold in Birmingham for the fourth time in 12 months after representing the country at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, 2022 World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships and 2022 World Athletics Championships set for Eugene in July. Tingay finished 17th in the 20km Walk in Tokyo but will head into the Commonwealth Games with the fastest time in 2022 over the 10,000m.

Matthew Ramsden returns to the Australian team after a tough 2021 saw him just miss selection in the Tokyo team. Bouncing back into the national team earlier this year for the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships, Ramsden will line up in both the men’s 1500m and 5000m.

Out in the jumps, Angus Armstrong will finally get to head overseas with the Australian team after gaining selection in the postponed 2022 FISU World University Games, and returns to the Commonwealth Games team after finishing fifth at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Athletics has been held at every Commonwealth Games since they were first held in 1930. Para-athletics were added to the program at the Victoria 1994 Commonwealth Games, then returning at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Australia and England are vying to become the first nation to win 200 gold medals in athletics at the Commonwealth Games. Australia is also on track to win its 500th athletics medal in Birmingham.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will be held from Thursday 28 July to Monday 8 August with the Athletics competitions to be conducted from Tuesday 2 August through to Sunday 7 August, with the competitions to be held at Alexander Stadium.
