WA’s best junior athletes impressed across the field disciplines and made the most of the familiar territory with the state collecting a suite of golden performances at the 2025 Australian Junior Athletics Championships.
Headlined by dynamic multi-events athletes Sophie Williams and Wyatt Hill, there was no stopping the best from the West from making an impact on the national stage.
Loading up her schedule with a collection of field and track events, Sophie Williams impressed all weekend long to medal in all six of her competitions. Starting with a herculean effort in the Women’s Under 18 Heptathlon, Williams secured a new State All-Comers record of 5201 points for silver before collecting field gold in the Under 17 Triple Jump. The West Track athlete is no stranger to delivering on the Australian stage and secured the National Triple Jump title with a leap of 11.72m.
Wyatt Hill had a breakout Junior Championships in front of the home crowd and joined Williams on the multi-event platform. A dominating performance in the Men’s Under 18 Decathlon saw Hill claim gold with 7,033 points before also claiming gold in the Under 18 Men’s Javelin final with a throw of 62.28m.
The state’s success in the Junior multi-events was capped off by a sensational collection of performances by Haro Tanabe-Armstrong in the Men’s Under 15 Heptathlon, securing the win with a total points score of 3757.
WA State Record Holder Lauren Kelly again dominated the Shot Put circle and returned to the National podium. Opening her campaign with the Women’s Under 18 Shot Put, Kelly bested the field by more than 75cm to claim gold with a mark of 16.17m, before returning for silver in the Women’s Under 18 Discus.
WA’s pole pedigree continued at the Championships as Daisy Brayshaw and Eva De Ronchi claimed national titles. De Ronchi collected one of the State’s first National titles with a win in the Under 15 Women’s Pole Vault, clearing 2.80m. While Daisy Brayshaw battled it out in the Women’s Under 18 final to claim gold with a best clearance of 3.82m
2024 Australian All Schools High Jump Champion Mila Joubert delivered the perfect bookend to the Brisbane-based win with another national gold medal in Perth. Stepping up into the Under 17 age group, Joubert delivered a personal best performance to clear 1.75m and collect the win.
Luca Prokscha has put the country on notice with a strong win in the Men’s Under 16 Shot Put. Throwing a personal best of 17.62m with the 4kg Shot Put, Prokscha bested the field by almost a meter to comfortably claim the Australian title.
WA’s young gun throwers capped off the State’s golden standard with impressive performances in the Under 13 and 14 Javelin finals. Kavroop Bhangu blitzed the Under 13 Women’s final with an epic opening throw to set a Championship Record of 40.00m and seal the win. While Kaden Ogle made the most of his Australian Athletics Championships debut with a clutch throw of 33.48m in Round Four to clinch the Men’s title.
State Record Holder Ethan Harbison impressed across the throw events but looked most dominant in the Under 14 Javelin final. Throwing a personal best of 47.22m, Harbison bettered the silver medallist by more than 5m to win gold.
Sam Eaton rounded out the National Titles in the field for WA with a win in the Men’s Under 15 Hammer Throw. Producing a personal best throw of 51.95m, Eaton claimed Gold in the event, as well as a silver and bronze in the Under 15 Discus and Shot Put finals, respectively.
