AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES HIT THE ROAD FOR KARRATHA

Top Australian Athletes are set to return to WA's North West region ahead of a jam-packed North West Championships bound for Karratha. 

2022 World Athletics Championships Representative Cruz Hogan and Australian Pole Vaulter Olivia Gross will work with Athletics Australia First Nations Officer Kyle Ennis to deliver a week of rural athletics opportunities throughout Karratha starting on Tuesday 12 September. 

Thanks to the Bibbulmun Fund powered by the Fremantle Foundation, Athletics Australia and Rio Tinto, Athletics West are bringing elite athletes into WA's North West region once again to work with Aboriginal and school communities ahead of the North West Championships. 

Building off work down previously in WA's Kimberley region, Athletics West CEO Vince Del Prete said he was "delighted to have high calibre athletes head up north and help energise the local Karratha Community a head of the North West Championships."

"Following on from WA's most successful World Championship campaign ever, we are excited to get Australian athletes out into the community and work to inspire the next generation of athletes. The talent in regional WA is staggering and tours like this are critical to help support regional athletes' journey," said Del Prete

"The tour will see the Athletes deliver 11 sessions to primary and high school-aged kids across Karratha before we gear up for the return of the North West Championships to Karratha. It's going to be a great week of athletics action and I would encourage the local community to take the chance to get involved." 

Following the weeklong regional tour, Karratha locals will get their chance to learn directly from the athletes at the FREE Community Event on Friday the 15th of September from 4:00 pm at Frank Butler Community Centre which is open to everyone.  

The 2023 North West Athletics Championships is set for the 16th and 17th of September at Frank Butler Community Centre, with community events running from the 12th to 15th of September throughout Karratha.
