ATHLETICS WEST LAUNCHES WORKING GROUPS TO REINFORCE ATHLETICS IN WA

Athletics West are excited to announce four community-based working groups designed to capture insights, feedback, and innovative ideas from members actively engaged in our sport.
To assist in the ongoing delivery and growth of athletics in Western Australia, Athletics West is now seeking nominations for all four working groups:
- Competition & Events
- Officiating
- Coaching
- Underpinning Pathway Programs
These groups will function as advisory and consultative groups, enabling Athletics West to better understand community needs and priorities in key areas. The four groups for implementation are:
Competition & Events

Providing feedback on competition formats, scheduling, rules and accessibility.

Sharing ideas for improving the athlete, coach, volunteer and spectator experience.

Identifying barriers to participation and retention within all community including regional levels.

Advising on competition growth opportunities (e.g., schools, mixed relays, community festivals).
Officiating
-
Discussing challenges around recruitment, retention, and recognition of officials.

Providing feedback on education and training needs.

Identifying ways to make officiating more welcoming and rewarding.

Sharing statewide perspectives on workforce gaps and solutions.
Coaching
-
Offering insights into the needs of coaches at grassroots and high-performance levels.

Identifying professional development gaps and priority support areas.

Sharing successful club and regional initiatives for wider adoption.

Exploring how schools, clubs, and Athletics West can work together more effectively.
Underpinning Pathway Programs

Collecting feedback on how pathways are understood and accessed by athletes and families.

Highlighting opportunities for stronger school-to-club links to encourage participation.

Providing insights on regional access and equity challenges to expand the sport.

Suggesting program growth and evolution to keep young people engaged in the sport long term at all stages of the Pathways.
The desired outcome for these groups are to strengthen the connection between Athletics West and its community, ensuring the sport evolves in line with participant needs while building a culture of collaboration and shared ownership across Western Australia.
