CHEERS TO THE HEARTBEAT OF OUR ATHLETICS COMMUNITY

Athletics West is joining sports organisations nationwide in commemorating and extending our gratitude to every volunteer within the athletics community.
As part of the National Volunteer Week, we want to shine a light on the more than 5,000 West Australians who volunteer and embody the spirit of dedication that defines our vibrant athletics community.
Every year our passionate volunteers offer their time and energy to support athletics competitions across the state, to ensure they run smoothly and safely for everyone involved.
From long jump rackers to Competition Managers, athletics would not exist without the effort of these dedicated individuals.
A stalwart of the community, Robert ‘Bob’ Schickert has been involved in athletics for almost 70 years, both as an athlete and the latter 25 years as an official.
As an avid fan of the sport and the community, , Schickert became a volunteer official because he felt it was his responsibility to give back to the Athletics Community the same way it had served him.
“I have competed in athletics since my school days, so nearly 70 years,” Schickert said.
“I received a lot of assistance from officials. I believe it is my responsibility to contribute to assisting other athletes to have a satisfying athletics career as I have.”
Since that decision, Schickert has gone above and beyond to give back to his sport having officiated at a state, national and international level. He has held a range of volunteer positions including President of the WA Masters Athletics Club and Secretary of Oceania Masters Athletics.
“I have been a volunteer official for about 25 years with Athletics WA and have officiated at many Masters athletics and Victorian marathon club events prior to then,” said Schickert.
Schickert describes volunteering in the Athletics Community as “challenging and satisfying” as he continues to enjoy watching each athlete's development journey.
“I encourage others to come along and join in, you will find it a very worthwhile experience and we are a friendly group of people.”
Athletics West would like to thank every volunteer who has contributed to the sport over the last twelve months, the sport is indebted to your ongoing commitment.
