The 2023/24 Summer Season will relaunch this Friday as Geraldton hosts the 2024 WA Country Championships powered by Coles. 400 of WA’s best Country Track and Field athletes are expected to travel to the seaside city in the hopes of claiming a coveted gold medal, with the event also representing an opportunity for young athletes to qualify for the upcoming 2024 State Junior Track and Field Championships.
The Championship offers an exciting opportunity for athletes aged five and over, including several Open Age Championship events in the 100m, 400m, 800m, Long Jump and Shot Put. For young athletes in the Under 6 and 7 age groups, the Country Championships will offer a modified program, including 70m, 100m, Hurdles and Turbo Javelin, whilst event offerings for athletes in the Under 8 to Under 17 age groups will be in line with the 2023/24 Little Athletics Rules of Competition.
For Little Athletics members in the Under 9 to Under 13 age categories, Country and Northwest members can achieve qualification for the 2024 WA State Junior Track and Field Championships powered by Go For 2&5, which will be held in early March, by placing within the top 2 of their events.
Athletics West proudly deliver the 2024 Country Championships powered by Coles in partnership with Geraldton Athletics Centre, Coles, City of Greater Geraldton, Healthway and their Go For 2&5 message, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Kumon, Keep On Running, and the Bibbulmun Fund powered by Fremantle Foundation.
In collaboration with the Mid-West Academy of Sport and Geraldton Athletics Centre, Athletics West will host a Sprints Clinic for both coaches and athletes on Thursday, the 11th of January.
The clinic aims to help improve athletes' technique in any sport involving sprinting or running and will cover warm-up drills, as well as drills for improving technique, acceleration and block starts. The session will be hosted by former Champion Hurdler and Australian representative Lyn Foreman alongside sprints coach and reigning State 200m Champion Kyle Ennis.
Alongside the Sprints Clinic, Athletics West will also be hosting a Level 1 Community Athletics Coaching Course before the commencement of the Country Championships. The course will focus on developing core coaching skills and understanding physical literacy and is targeted towards athletes looking to transition into mentoring or coaching and Little Athletics coaches, amongst others.
