The WA Athletics Stadium will light up this weekend as the first championship event of the 2025-26 Summer Season powered by Fuel to Go & Play is set to attract just under 600 school aged athletes for three action packed days of athletics action.
From sprints to throws, hurdles to jumps, the WA All Schools Championships will showcase the state’s best up-and-coming athletes as they chase titles, personal bests and selection opportunities for the Australian All Schools Championships in Melbourne early December.
The 100m distance will see a string of highly anticipated sprint clashes, including Emilia Reed and Sade Hewes who will go head-to-head in the Under 16 Girl's event. Both athletes have shown exceptional early-season form with Reed and Hewes proving an exciting match-up at the recent ACC School Carnival earlier in the month. Both girls ran the 100m distance in record time however it was Reed who took line honours by 0.04 seconds stopping the clock at 11.94.
Luke Weber started his season in style, setting a new state record in the Under 14 Boys’ 400m during Strive last week. Weber will be looking to replicate his 50.89 performance when he takes to the track over the weekend. Under 14 girls’ state record holder, Billie Richardson, will also be looking to take the top spot on the podium in the Under 14 Girls' 400m and 800m events with the up-and-coming runner hunting her own state record across both disciplines.
The Under 16 Boy's 100m Hurdles will feature a match-up not to be missed with Travarn Ackerman, Michael Passeretto and Cambell Bannister going head-to-head in the straight final. Ackerman heads into the race as favourite with a season's best of 13.03, however a win won’t come easy with Passeretto and Bannister both looking in form ahead of the championships.
The hurdles will be a highlight of the weekend, with Mia Shelley and Sophie Williams set to battle it out in the U17 100m Hurdles. 14-year-old Shelley’s clean technique will be tested against Williams’ strength and versatility, as Williams also lines up in an incredible six events: Javelin, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Long Jump, 100m Hurdles, and High Jump. Spectators can expect Williams duel with Mikayla Gabbitus in the Under 17 Girls High Jump to bring added excitement to the field events.
Wheelchair racers, Madison Kent and Ryan Hennessy are set to showcase their talent on the track across a range of distances across the weekend. Kent, one of the state’s most versatile wheelchair racers, will contest the T53 100m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m events as she continues her strong preparation for national competition later this year. Meanwhile, Hennessy will line up for the first time at a championship event in the T54 class, with the young para-athlete contesting the 100m, 200m, and 400m.
While the track will deliver plenty of fast finishes and close contests, the action won’t stop there, with the field events shaping up to provide just as much excitement. State record holder Lauren Kelly will enter the weekend fresh of the back of setting a new Under 18 State Record in the Discus Throw. Kelly set her new standard in the Discus at 51.05m and will look to book her ticket to the Australian All Schools Championships in both the Under 18 Girl’s Discus and Shot Put events.
The Under 15 Boys’ Discus event will be one to watch with up-and-coming thrower Max Murphy set to make his mark in the throwing circle, while Liam Vergano-van Niekerk and Sam Eaton will prove to be tough competition. Australian Under 16 Shot Put Champion, Luca Prokscha will also be looking to take home the double gold, testing his talent in the Under 16 Boys Shot Put and Discus events.
Young Pole Vaulter Daisy Brayshaw is on the rise, jumping an impressive 4.05m personal best in her season opener during Strive last week. Brayshaw will be looking to build on her jump when she takes to the field in the Under 18 Women’s Pole Vault event this weekend.
Across three days of competition, the WA All Schools Championships will once again serve as a crucial stepping stone for Western Australia’s next generation of track and field talent. For many, it’s an opportunity to test themselves against the state’s best, chase qualification for national selection, and continue building towards future success on the national and international stage.
With record-breaking performances already marking the early season and plenty of emerging stars ready to shine, this weekend’s championships promise to deliver a thrilling showcase of athletic skill, determination, and sportsmanship. Whether in the throws circle, on the runway, or down the home straight, the passion and talent on display will highlight the bright future of athletics in WA.
