EVENT RECAP | 2022 WA Country Championships Kalgoorlie

The 2022 WA Country Championships saw more than 330 athletes from 12 different centres from all over WA, battling it out in the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie. In some testing conditions under the Eastern goldfields sun, the athletes left it all on the track, producing some incredible results.

The weekend saw twelve new WA Country Records. Isabella Bidesi (Bunbury) claimed two for herself, running 5:12.06 in the Under 15 girls 1500m and 2:25.15 in the under 15 girls 800m which hadn’t been broken since 1999. An’ne Pelser (Collie) also claimed 2 records, her first in the Under 16 girls Javelin where she threw 30.99m, then throwing 34.58m in the Under 16 Discus. Gemma Buckle (Collie) threw 43.46m in the Under 14 girls Javelin, while Taya Campbell (Bunbury) threw 24.31m in the Under 10 girls turbo Javelin. Also from Bunbury, Rhianna Di Giusseppe ran a time of 48.27s in the Under 15 girls 300m Hurdles. In the Under 16 girls, 300m hurdles Nevaeh Hill (Geraldton) ran a time of 46.44s.

Brooklyn Bennet (Headland) made a name for himself breaking two long-standing Country Records, running a time of 27.11s in the Under 12 boys 200m breaking the previous record set back in 1992. Brooklyn then went on to break a 38-year-old record in the Under 12 boys 400m running a time of 1:00.71. Local boy Marcus Roden (Eastern Goldfields) set an Under 13 boys Shot Put record of 31.71m. In the under 10 boys 70m Sprint Kyle Adlam (Bunbury) set a record with a time of 10.28s.

We would like to thank the special guests for making it over the weekend. Uncle Gary delivered an inspiring welcome to Country speech.

One of the most popular attractions of the event was 2018 Commonwealth Games Champion and 2x Australian Olympian Kurtis Marschall. Marschall was out signing autographs taking photos and giving out advice for our next-generation athletes.

To all Officials, Volunteers, and Parents for being so helpful, always putting a smile on their face, and their help in setting up, running events, and packing down.
