EVENT RECAP | 2025 WA ALL SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Emilia Reed and Daisy Brayshaw have delivered World Athletics Junior Championships qualifiers at 2025 WA All Schools Championships to headline an action packed three days. With a slew of pending Australian and State records across the weekend, WA’s best High School athletes have set a high standard for the season to come. 

Building of an impressive opening competition two weeks ago, Daisy Brayshaw (Mater Dei) has consolidated her early form with a personal best in the Under 18 Women’s Pole Vault. The young athlete had to wait her turn in cool conditions on Friday night but looked effortless over the opening heights before raising the bar to 4.06m and securing the World Junior Qualifier. Brayshaw was able to add even more height, concluding her competition with a best clearance of 4.10m.

Picking up where she left off last season, Emilia Reed (Sacred Heart College) has once again dominated the women’s track with a set of blistering times in the Under 16 100m and 200m finals. Reed launched her campaign with a flying 11.59 (1.8) in the Women’s 100m to secure a qualifier and then replicated her brilliance in the Women’s 200m on Sunday to claim gold with a wind assisted 23.59 (3.5). While early in the season, Reed isn’t leaving anything to chance and will look to continue putting the Australian selectors on notice over the coming months.

Reed was almost joined by Kate Philpott (Sacred Heart) with a qualifier for the 100m with Philpott crossing the line in 11.72 but was unlucky to have a gusty +3.0 wind. Philpott nonetheless claimed the Under 17 Women's 100m and 200m title.

Up and coming WA para-athletes delivered an impressive collection of results across the weekend with nine pending Australian records. Mitchell Warrilow (Ridge View SC) led the way with three pending track records in the Under 17 T38 category, as well as three WA All School medals across para and able-bodied races. Warrilow ran a blitzing 100m final to cross in 11.97, as well as 23.74 in the 200m, and 53.56 in the 400m final. Wheelchair athlete Ryan Hennessy (Court Grammar) added to the excitement with a new pending Under 15 T54 100m record, crossing the line in 21.93. While Josh Reeve rounded out the pending track records with a new Under 20 T01 800m record of 2:04.58 in the Men’s Under 20 invitational event.

Out in the field Griffin Angelatos (Corpus Christi) and Armani Latouche (MLC) both set pending throw records. Latouche threw 8.50m in Javelin to claim a pending Under 15 F37 record, while Angelatos collected three records in Men’s Under 17 F64 category. Angelatos started with a throw of 29.81m on Friday night in the Javelin, before going back-to-back on Saturday with records in Shot Put (10.56) and Discus (30.86m).

Joining in on the record haul was Lauren Kelly who once again moved the mark further in the throws. Kelly already had a staggering nine State records to her name before the Championships, but added the Women’s Under 18, Under 20 and Open Discus State record, as well as the State Under 18 All Comers record, after unleashing a 52.92m throw in her final. Kelly’s result means she now holds every state record for the Women’s Discus, and eclipses Vanessa French’s Open and Under 20 records set in 1989 and 1988 respectively. Capping off her final WA All Schools Championships, Kelly walked away with wins in both the Under 18 Women’s Discus and Shot Put competitions.

Two of WA’s best multi eventers swept their respective age groups with Wyatt Hill (Darling Range Sports) and Sophie Williams (Belridge SC) enjoying success across the disciplines. Hill is looking stronger than ever and clean swept the Men’s Under 18 100m, 110m Hurdles, Long Jump and Javelin, as well as a bronze in the Men’s Under 18 High Jump. With four gold medals, Hill is building a strong base for the 2026 Australian Athletics Championships. While Williams displayed a similar dominance at the WA Athletics Stadium with five gold medals in Under 17 100m Hurdles, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put and Javelin, as well as a silver in the High Jump.

Several young guns impressed out on the track, with the likes of Ginger Gleeson, Luke Weber and Harry Thomas collecting a set of medals. Ginger Gleeson (Denmark Senior High School) delivered three consecutive days of impressive races, starting with line honours and a title win in the Women’s Under 17 400m Hurdles. Gleeson backed it up with a hard-fought win over Mia Shelley (Peter Moyes ACS) in the Under 16 400m, before claiming silver in the Women’s Under 16 800m on Sunday.

Luke Weber (Guilford Grammar) will be looking to sweep the Australian All Schools Championships later in December after a strong showing in the Under 14 Men’s 400m and 200m. Weber looked unassailable in the 400m final on Saturday, winning the WA All Schools title in 51.12, just shy of his State Record. He found similar form in the 200m final on Sunday in an exhilarating battle with Tyson Khin (WHS) and Ethan Morton (Hale). Khin claimed the 100m title earlier in the weekend, but was unable to best Weber over the 200m, with Luke Weber crossing first in 22.26 (3.1), Morton second in 23.43 and Khin third with 23.64.

Battling heavy winds and a huge down pour, Harry Thomas (Hale) claimed gold in a closely fought Under 16 Men’s 1500m on Friday Night. Working through tough conditions, Thomas’ final 200m dash secured him the win in 4:12.93, before executing a similar tactic on Sunday in the Under 16 800m final to claim both WA All Schools titles.

As the qualifying event for the 2025 Australian All Schools Championships bound for Melbourne this December, Athletes who finished first and second will be provided with more information about the State team later this week.
