Published Thu 10 Nov 2022

The 2022 WA All Schools Championships powered by Go For 2&5 saw a record-breaking number of WA high school students battle it out at Ern Clark Athletics Centre for the state title and National selection. With more than 570 athletes representing 132 WA High Schools, the weekend saw a slew of incredible results and the inaugural WA Schools Cup get awarded.

Headlining the Championships was National throws Champion and Trinity College student Robert Marchesi-Scott. After recently setting a State Record in Shot Put, Marchesi-Scott made light work of the Under 18 competition to claim the title with a best throw of 19.11m, before a dominant performance in the Boy’s Discus Under 18 with a best throw of 53.99m.

Fellow 2022 National Champions Olivia Dodds (John Wallaston) and Leah O’Brien (Perth College) impressed on the track. Dodds looks set to build on last year’s breakout season after claiming both the 100m and 200m Under 17 titles. While O’Brien continues to be unmatched over the 100m and 200m in her age group, with the Perth College student sweeping the Under 15 age group.

Up-and-coming junior athlete Sophie Williams had a busy weekend with the Belridge Secondary College student contesting six events. Claiming titles in the Under 14 Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump, Williams will be one to watch at the Adelaide-bound Australian All Schools Championships in December.

WA’s growing Javelin talent was on display with National Champions Zara O’Dea (St Hilda) and Tristan Wilson (Kalamunda Senior High School), claiming gold in the Under 14 Girls and Boys Javelin Throw with a throw of 40.11m and 39.36m respectively. The Boy’s Under 15 competition saw an epic showdown between National Champion Brayden Phillips (Butler College) and Wyatt Hill (Darling Range). In what will surely become a season-long rivalry, Hill threw a massive 50.95m to take out the gold which meant Phillips’ had to settle for silver.

Jamie Deane (Yanchep Secondary college) had a weekend to remember with wins in the Boys Under 16 800m and 1500m. A dominant performance saw the Yancep student stretch out in the Boy’s 1500m and claim the title in 4:03.84, before backing it up with the 800m title in 1:55.38. While in the Girl's competition, Danielle Graham (Peter Moyes) blitzes the track again in the Girls Under 16 1500m with a time of 4:38.82.

Josiah John (Shenton College), Kai Gale (Aquinas College) and Jordan Hamilton (Canning Vale College) put on a show in the Under 16 short track. John took out the first of the titles with a win in the 100m, which saw him pip Gale by 0.04 second, before going toe-to-toe with Hamilton in the 200m. Crossing the line in 23.18 (-0.7) Hamilton clinched the 200m title, as well as claimed the 400m title to come out on top.
