PRACTISE TO ACHIEVE GOALS

Published Fri 27 Aug 2021

Goal setting is central to success on and off the track. Whether you are a Little Athlete or an Australian representative, practising goal setting is integral. It acts as a road map that identifies a destination and, more importantly, the steps needed to achieve the goal.

Most people have an idea of the outcome they want; however, many people struggle to identify the steps required to support the journey. In athletics, these steps are facilitated through things like coaches, interclub competitions, and training squads.

“Goal setting is important in all aspects of life. Breaking these goals down into measurable and achievable objectives can help to instil good behaviours and increase internal motivation,” said Danny Kevan, Athletics West Pathways Development Coordinator.

“For young athletes in the Athletics West Development Squad, a goal might be to gain selection in the WA team for the Australian Little Athletics Championship team. To achieve this, the athletes are encouraged to work on small objectives such as improved nutrition, use of recovery techniques or mastery of a new drill.”

“Achieving these small yet consistent objectives will build a confident and motivated athlete more likely to achieve their goal.”

While goal setting will help identify what you want to accomplish, it’s important to remember you only have control over your performance. Therefore, focusing on what you can control is vital. By being mindful of your performance and the supporting processes, you will be far more successful in reaching your goals.

But what about your Little Athlete’s goals for the classroom? How are you supporting that journey?

In the same way we look to identify support programs and education opportunities to improve performance out on the track, education organisations like Kumon can help enhance your child’s performance in the classroom.

Practice and goal-setting are core components of the Kumon Mathematics and English programmes, where children may practise a topic to improve performance or understanding. The right amount of practice and a regular study habit prepares students for higher levels of work, laying the foundation for smooth progress.

At Kumon, children also set and achieve short, medium and long-term goals throughout their worksheet study.

“Setting goals is critical for children of all ages to be motivated to succeed. These goals can be short and long-term in nature, for example, to learn a particular skill, to finish a particularly difficult level of worksheets or to complete the Kumon programme”, said Linh Koh, Instructor of Kumon Innaloo Education Centre.

Whether it is for the classroom or the upcoming Little Athletics season, it is never too late to start goal setting. Here are some tips to start your Little Athlete’s goal setting journey:

  • Write your goals down;

  • Set short, medium and long-term goals;

  • Explore support programs like Kumon to accelerate your journey;

  • Visualise yourself achieving your goals and not just the outcome;

  • Reflect and acknowledge your progress.
