VALE LEE DERBY

Athletics West is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Lee Derby, a remarkable woman whose contribution to athletics in Western Australia spanned more than 53 years and has shaped the very foundation of our sport and the athletics community. 

Lee was a pillar of the WA athletics community, a highly respected official, dedicated volunteer, and inspirational coach whose influence reached from grassroots clubs to the World stage. Her commitment was unwavering. Week after week, year after year, Lee devoted her time, energy, and expertise to supporting athletes, competitions, and the development of our sport in Western Australia. 

Her achievements were many. As an official, Lee set the benchmark for professionalism, fairness, and care. She was known for her deep knowledge, her calm presence under pressure, and her ability to create an environment where athletes felt supported and understood. As a coach, she guided countless athletes, nurturing juniors through their first seasons, mentoring developing talents, and playing a role in the journeys of athletes who eventually went on to represent Australia at pinnacle events such as the Olympic and Winter Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships. Her influence was both wide and deeply personal.  

Yet Lee’s greatest legacy lies not only in her roles, but in the impact, she had on people; inspiring confidence, encouraging perseverance, and making every athlete feel seen.  Her kindness, her patience, and her belief in others changed the paths of so many. It is impossible to measure the full extent of the lives she shaped.

Lee was not only respected, but she was so loved. Her loss will be felt deeply by athletes, officials, coaches, families, and the many friends she made along the way.
