After top 10 performances in Peru at the World Athletics Under 20 Championships, Australian decathlete Jack Whiteside and Alexandra Griffin are bound for the Australian Outback to help inspire the next generation.
Joining Athletics West First Nations’ officer Kyle Ennis, the trio will deliver an action-packed week of rural athletics clinics in the Pilbara as part of the lead up to the 2024 North West Championships.
The trio are set to deliver a range of activities including two days of athletics clinics at local schools with Griffin saying, “I’m grateful to pass on lessons I’ve learnt over my years as a junior athlete to the younger generation.”
“Having starts athletics in under 7’s, I know how much fun these championship events can be for athletes so I’m looking forward to helping and being a part of the Championships in Karratha.”
Following the tour, the Karratha community will get their chance to learn from the two 2024 World Athletics Under 20 representatives at a free Community Come and Try event on Friday the 20th of September at 4:45pm.
Athletics West CEO Vince Del Prete said “we are delighted to have two high caliber athletes visit the region to share their experiences and deliver athletics clinics to the next generation of athletes.”
“The talent in regional WA is exciting for our sport and tours like this are critical to supporting these athletes’ journeys,” said Del Prete.
“Australia’s best athletes have delivered sensational performances across the globe from Paris to Peru, and now it’s the Pilbara’s time to shine. We are thrilled to bring two world top 10 junior athletes to Karratha and help celebrate athletics with the local North West community.”
The 2024 North West Athletics Championships will take place at Frank Butler Reserve on the 21st and 22nd of September, with community events on the 19th and 20th of September.
