GOAL SETTING FOR GOLDEN PERFORMANCES

Published Fri 14 Jun 2024

Every season our Little Athletes will set goals to run faster, throw further and jump higher. Thanks to our incredible parents, coaches, and centre volunteers, we can teach our children how best to achieve these goals.

Achieving goals isn’t just about setting a measurable task and finding the easiest way to get there, it is about creating great habits throughout the journey that guide you to reach your goal and continue a lifelong quest for knowledge, growth, and fulfilment.

Whether it’s on the track, at home or in the classroom, goal setting is an effective way to increase motivation and can be reinforced by supporting children to adopt healthy self-learning habits.

Setting goals and creating habits are an integral part of being an athlete. Goal setting allows athletes to plan their season and create a pragmatic path to making nationals or achieving personal bests. By creating healthy self-learning and self-reflecting habits, athletes build a consistent approach to maximise their chance at achieving their goals.

Like our partners at Kumon, we believe that self-learning is an important habit for children to practise, to foster a growth mindset. Joanne Adam, Division Leader of Kumon WA, believes self-learning to be an important tool to allow children to build good habits to achieve great goals.

“Self-learning is the skill of studying an example, drawing on previous learning and having a go until you accomplish your task or the solve the problem,” Adam said.

“At Kumon, students study the example in their mathematics or English worksheets, draw on previous learning and give it a try. They try, and try again, until they finally get it, sometimes with a hint from their Kumon Instructor.”

“We help ingrain self-learning as a habit for our students, so they come to expect the challenge of something new, and gain satisfaction in working it out for themselves. They develop a mindset that no problem is too difficult to attempt.”

In athletics, setting clear goals is paramount to success, and Kumon’s method of self-learning not only fosters discipline and perseverance but also equips athletes with the skills needed to set and achieve their goals, ensuring they reach their full potential on and off the field.
