RECAP | 2023 WA COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Starting off 2023 strong with this years WA Country Championships power by Coles at the Northam Recreation Centre. 350 participants endured the hot and windy weather over the weekend that had record breaking performances and close finishes between little athletes.

Headlining this state event is Ella Batten (Geraldton) who represented WA at the 2022 Australian All Schools Championships in Adelaide. She opened her campaign with a record-breaking performance in the Under 17 Girls High Jump at 1.64m. She then came first in the Girl's Long Jump at 4.85m and 100m hurdles at 16.49.

Rhianna Di Giuseppe (Bunbury) had a memorable weekend winning breaking the country record for the Under 16 Girls Javelin throw at 31.87m, and coming first in the girls 100m Run at 13.51, 100m Hurdles at 16.20, 300m Hurdles at 50.00, Javelin Throw 500g with a distance of 31.87m and Long Jump at 5.13m.

Taya Campbell (Bunbury) broke the Under 11 Triple Jump country record with 9.31m and 8m Hurdles at 14.46m along with an impressive string of wins over the weekend; Long Jump with 4.06m, High Jump score of 1.37m and Javelin Throw of 25.49m.

An’ne Pelser (Collie) broke the country record for both the Under 17 Girls Javelin Throw and Shot Put 3kg at 32.51m and 11.77m respectively. She also had an impressive Discus Throw 1kg of 31.50m.

Wyatt Bonner (Bunbury) broke the Under 11 Boys 80m Hurdles at 13.96 and was successful in the Javelin Throw 400g with a score of 22.11m. Jayden Fenn (Bunbury) broke the Under 11 Boys Discus Throw 750g at 31.23m and came first in Shot Put 2kg with a throw of 10.13m.  

Max Murphy (Bunbury) gave his best efforts over the weekend and was able to break a Country Championship record for the Under 12 Boys Shot Put throwing 11.14m.  

Another record broken was the Under 15 Girls Javelin Throw 500g that saw Gemma Buckle's (Collie) third throw at 37.02m, she also came first in Shot Put 3kg with 10.45m. Destiny Tupuhi (Eastern Goldfields) has the Under 11 Girls Shot Put 2kg country record in her resume with a throw of 8.45m and also won the Discus Throw 500g with 26.85m.

Northam could not deny Brooklyn Bennet’s (Hedland) supreme talent over the weekend. The Under 13 Boys 400m saw Brooklyn scorch the competition finishing with 59.67, 100m at 13.12, 800m at 2:28.23, triple jump at 10.01 and the 400m at 59.67. Hedland’s finest finished first place in all the events he competed in.

Kyle Adlam (Bunbury) was able to blitz his competition on day 1 in both the Under 11 Boys 400m with a final score of 1:08.24 and Long Jump with 4.39m. The following day he leaps past everyone in the 200m at 30.00 and Triple Jump with a score of 9.31m.

Morgan Hill (Bunbury) was successful with his dominant performance in the Under 14 Boys Long Jump at 5.08m on day 1, followed by two first place finishes in the Boys 200m Hurdles with 32.63m and Boys High Jump with 1.44m.

A sprint finish in the Under 15 Boys 400m saw Max Earl (Collie) come out victorious finishing with 58.53 whilst Hurricane Clark (Eastern Goldfields) and Kale Treloar (Northam) finished with 58.87 and 59.08 respectively. Throughout the weekend it was these boys going neck and neck in each event but it would be Kale proving to have the more successful weekend getting first place in the 300m Hurdles at 45.89m, the 200m at 26.42 and the 100m at 13.20.

Day 1 saw an impressive performance by Heidi Mann (Northam) finishing with 1:21.36 for the Girls Under 9 400m run and 3:13:15 in the 800m on Sunday.

Representing Bunbury in the Girls Under 16 400m is Isabella Bidesi with a finish of 1:00.76. Her success continued over the weekend placing first in the 1500m at 5:32.63 and the 800m at 2:29.41.

A close finish between Andy Moore (Bunbury) and Caleb Battista (Northam) in the Under 9 Boys 700m Race Walk with scores of 5:09.70 and 5:11.13 respectively. Any Moore continued to find success in Shot Put 2kg at 5.54m and Discus Throw 500g
