STATE LITTLE ATHLETICS TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT

Published Tue 30 Mar 2021

Athletics West are pleased to announce the WA Little Athletics State Team for the Coles Little Athletics National Challenge, a virtual leader board competition celebrating the performances of Little Athletes around the country.

Athletes will be ranked nationally based on their results at their State Championships (U13) and State Combined Event Championships (U15) or, in the case of Northern Australia (combined NT and NW WA team), their previous Association competition in each of the events that they would have competed in at ALAC.

The Coles National Challenge was developed in light of the cancellation of the Australian Little Athletics Championships event due to the circumstances cause by the global pandemic. Athletes who are ranked 1, 2 and 3 in each event at the end of the Challenge will receive awards for their achievements.

Athletics West will be offering selected athletes the opportunity to register for the WA Little Athletics Development Camp. The Camp will be held from the 7-9 May at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp (Hillarys, WA) and provide athletes the opportunity to learn from elite athletes, compete in an exciting team-based athletics competition and participate in both athletics development and social activities throughout the weekend.

Athletes have been selected from results of the 2021 Little Athletics State Championships. The Camp will be offered to:

  • 20 male and 20 female athletes from Under 13 age group, as per the 2021 Australian Little Athletics Championship team quota
  • Top 3 male and 3 female athletes from the Under 15 age group at the WA Little Athletics Combined Event Championships (2020-21 Season)
  • 14 male and 14 female athletes from the Under 14 age group, due to the cancellation of the 2020 WA Little Athletics State Championships and 2020 Australian Little Athletics Championships
  • Top 3 male and 3 female athletes from the Under 15 age group (current Under 16 athletes) at the WA Little Athletics Combined Event Championships (2019-20 Season), due to the cancellation of the 2020 WA Little Athletics State Championships and 2020 Australian Little Athletics Championships.

Congratulations to the following athletes on their selection.

Team Selection Information

Please note team selections have been made from 2021 WA Little Athletics State Championship results.

Team Selection Information for Under 13 Athletes

All athletes are selected by their State Association with a view to obtaining the best results for the State team. Gold medallists in each event are considered as a priority selection, however podium positions do not guarantee selection due to the team-based nature of the event and consideration is given to an athlete’s performances in multiple disciples. For the 2021 Coles National Challenge, each Association can enter a maximum of four competitors in each individual event for the Under 13 competition, with a total team of 40 athletes.

Team Selection Information for Under 14 Athletes

All athletes are selected by their State Association with a view to obtaining the best results for the State team. The criteria for the cancelled 2020 Australian Little Athletics Championships, was a maximum of two competitors in each individual event, with a total team of 26 athletes. Following the selection process, it was determined to extend this to 28 athletes, due to close results and the flexibility afforded by the informal nature of the team.

Team Selection for Under 15 Athletes

Under 15 athletes who finished in the top 3 placegetters at either the 2019/20 (last season) or 2020/21 (current season) Little Athletics State Combined Events Championships will also be invited to attend, as these athletes would have been automatically selected for their respective ALAC teams.
