As the 2019-20 Season formally comes to a close, Athletics in WA reflects on the first successful season under the One Management Team model. Â Whilst the summer athletics season ended abruptly amidst the COVID-19 crisis, we have continued to make significant progress in our transition to becoming One Sport.

The Australian Combined Events Championships took place over the weekend at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre, with seven WA athletes making the trip to Brisbane.
The State 5000m Championships took place on Friday night, with Under 20 and Open contesting the 12.5 lap race. The Open State titles were claimed by Sinead Noonan (17:13.46) and Kurt Wesley (14:56.18), with the Under 20 State titles won by Tia Chitty (17:43.68) and Brandon Ford (14:55.61). Congratulations to all athletes and their coaches and support teams.
The first event of the Coles Summer Super Series; the Jandakot Airport Track Classic has set the bar extremely high in competition, with West Australian Pole Vaulter Kurtis Marschall jumping 5.80m, which is a Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifying height.
The wait is nearly over with the first major track meet of the Olympic year just days away. The Jandakot Track Classic this Saturday night in Perth is the popular destination for high quality sprinting and jumping and has attracted strong fields as they strive for Tokyo Olympic qualification.
It was a weekend that had it all for Team WA - personal bests, meet records and medals galore, culminating in the Small State Trophy victory to conclude the 2019 Australian All Schools Championships. There was extreme heat and pouring rain, but consistency could be found in the effort of the 203 WA athletes giving their best despite trying conditions.
A great week of athletics has seen five records fall at local competition, including the Under 18 Australian Triple Jump record for Dylan James (15.84m).
